Introduction

If you’re reading this, you probably came across a TikTok where I proposed the idea of Blue Jays fan fiction. As an avid romance reader, I’ve been desperately craving a series that highlights all the positive aspects of Toronto that have kept me here for the past fifteen years. Seeing the city come together during the World Series left me inspired, and I decided to explore that passing thought a little more deeply. Though the World Series may not have ended the way the city hoped, my personal superpower has always been turning negatives into positives, which is one of my many goals for this project.

Fan fiction can sometimes have negative connotations, but to me, it means taking inspiration from a familiar source and making it your own. This story centers a fictional Toronto baseball team, and though I've incorporated a few real elements, the characters and plot are fictional.

Fans at Rogers Skydome erupt into cheers as Canadian baseball rookie Elliott Turner steps up to the plate at the 2025 World Series, Toronto Sky Falcons vs New York Liberties.

CLARK JENNINGS (two-time World Series Champion, Toronto Sky Falcons): It’s the bottom of the ninth and the Falcons are down by one run, but if there’s one player we can count on to lead us to a victory tonight, it’s Elliott Turner. 

TARA MILANO (former Olympic Gold Medalist): That’s right, Clark. It’s only his first year in the league, but he is having one hell of a season with his hometown team. The Falcons took a chance on this power hitter, and man, has it paid off.

JENNINGS: He’s batting 0.324 and has scored four home runs in the playoffs alone. 

MILANO: At this point, the only thing standing in the way of a win for New York is Elliott Turner, and it looks like they know it, too.

I’m shivering in my Roots sweatsuit as I pace the front porch of Gramps’ house. Though this outfit has seen better days, it’s the warmest thing I have with me here in Toronto, seeing as the two boxes of belongings I shipped over are nowhere to be found. The Canada Post worker on the other end of the line argues otherwise, assuring me they were delivered.

“33 Niagara Lane? Toronto, Ontario?” I reconfirm for the third time as the March winds sting against my skin, their force growing stronger with every second. This must be why my parents only took us to visit my grandparents in the summer.

“Yes, ma’am,” he says, his voice way too chipper to be spreading bad news. “Says they were delivered and accepted yesterday.”

“So wait, who was the girl who was yelling at you last night?” My roommate Jack asks as he pours himself a protein shake out of the blender.

“Which one?” Luis laughs, shaking his head.

I adjust my barstool next to him at our kitchen counter. “Laugh all you want,” I say. “But she’s our neighbour. If I’m in the doghouse, we as a collective are all in the doghouse.”

“Oh, no.” Luis’s eyes grow wide with fear. “You cannot date our neighbour. Please tell me you didn’t hook up with her?” Out of all the guys on the team, he’s the one who’s had my back the most this past year, so I can’t blame him for his concern. A mistake for me is a mistake for everyone, and if there’s one thing that’s actually off limits, it’s a repeat of last year.
